Houston Piano Company recommends the following education music publishers. Each has one or
more complete piano methods, accompanied by digital Music Tutor files to make learning quicker
and more enjoyable.
Alfred has several piano methods, acclaimed by teachers worldwide. Now owning the Warner Bros.
catalog, they feature a vast catalog of popular music titles as well. Also, be sure to look at their
computer-music programs.

Boosey & Hawkes has a large international collection of educational and performance music. In the U.S., Chris Norton is the most well-known composer and lecturer. Please look particularly at the
Microjazz Collections. WOW! http://www.boosey.com/pages/teaching/
Long recognized as one of the world’s largest publishers, Hal Leonard recently released the Hal
Leonard Student Piano Method, a comprehensive course of study, followed by an Adult Piano
Method. Both of these feature brilliant music recordings by Phillip Keveren. http://halleonard.com/pianoEd.jsp
Music Sales and Shawnee Press have a great collection of classics and popular tunes, with Shawnee
Press representing the educational titles.

Willis Music is best know for “the RED BOOKS,” or the John Thompson Piano Method. Still the
world’s best-seller, it’s now available with MIDI files. Almost as well known, Edna Mae Burnam’s
“Teaching Little Fingers to Play.” It, too, has MIDI accompaniment files for the utmost fun while
developing finger dexterity.

to Phillip Keveren’s piano folios. http://halleonard.com/church.jsp
Well known since the days of Fred Waring, Shawnee Press has a great catalog, with many
“undiscovered gems” of sacred music. http://www.shawneepress.com/

MIDI FILE resources:
Nearly all classical masterworks for the piano are contained in these two sites. The quality varies, as
the files are free. However, each recording artist is musically and technically accurate, so you have a
good resource for either learning or tutoring, when the teacher or other expert is not within shouting
distance, “Can you come over now, and listing to Fur Elise one more time, please, honey,
please?”
Actually, these resources interactively instruct students through many difficult passages. Call us at
HOUSTON PIANO CO for additional help, or to add more resources to the list below.

PIPE ORGAN PROJECT
The SoundCanvas Pipe Organ Project is one of my all-time favorites, as it lists almost every imaginable
classical organ work. The quality varies somewhat, but you’ve got to appreciate this labor of
love of pipe organ fanciers the world over. You can listen to the files, print them out, quickly email
them to friends or even improvise above them for “high church” ceremonies (without practicing
your little fingers to the bone. . .)
